Extended producer responsibility system

In order to comply with the European Union's waste management directives, the waste management system in Hungary is also being transformed, and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system and the associated fee will be introduced from 1 July 2023.

Organisations subject to the EPR system have already had to register from 1 April on the MOHU Partner Portal operated by MOL Hulladékgazdálkodási Zrt. From 1 May 2023 onwards, the affected entities already operating have to submit a registration application to the national waste management authority, with a deadline of 31 May 2023.

The first reporting deadline for organisations liable to pay the fee will be the 20th day of the month following the third quarter, which is 20 October 2023.

In addition to the extended producer responsibility fee, the environmental product charge will remain in place and the amount of the EPR fee can be deducted from the amount of the product charge according to specific rules.
